Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) offers a diverse, interdisciplinary, and patient-centered educational environment renowned throughout the world. Since our founding in 1868, we have been committed to excellence in education, research, patient care, and community service.

Education

At TUSDM, we train our diverse body of students and residents to practice dentistry in the 21st century. By treating patients in the school’s Teaching Clinics and through a variety of externships at hospitals and government-sponsored dental clinics around the country, our students and residents understand not just how to apply science to practice, but how to employ compassion in the treatment of human illness.

Students and faculty benefit from Tufts University’s commitment to interdisciplinary teaching, research, and practice. Located in the heart of Tufts's Health Sciences Campus in downtown Boston, TUSDM shares resources and research breakthroughs with Tufts University School of Medicine, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and the Tufts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

TUSDM offers a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D) degree program that is designed to meet the educational requirements of a license to practice dentistry in the United States. The postgraduate certificate programs at TUSDM, listed below, are designed so that program graduates are eligible for the respective board certifications.

Our students and residents provide exceptional and affordable care to our patients, and our patients help train the next generation of oral health professionals. We believe that proficiency and compassion go hand in hand and that is why our patients always come first.

Research

At TUSDM, research and teaching are complementary, producing professionals who possess the analytical capacity and the spirit of inquiry to deal with an ever-increasing knowledge base and rapid technological changes. Our vision is to develop, advance, and disseminate knowledge of oral health issues to benefit the profession and the society it serves.

Community

Reflecting Tufts University’s mission of community service and citizenship development, we provide comprehensive instruction and conduct research in a wide array of public health topics, providing a model for future dentists through extensive outreach programs that bring quality services and preventive education to the community.

Our largest community program, Tufts Dental Facilities (TDF) provides comprehensive dental care for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Massachusetts. The program began in 1976 as a partnership with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to improve access and services to these underserved patients. Today, we are proud to offer expert services to more than 6,500 patients in eight locations across the state.
