Prosthetic heart valve and a penicillin allergy
The case
A 71-year-old man needs scaling and root planing and one extraction. Two years ago he had a transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He also had a total knee replacement 4 years ago. He reports a penicillin allergy: hives and lip swelling after amoxicillin 10 years ago. Medications: apixaban 5 mg twice daily (for atrial fibrillation), metoprolol, atorvastatin.
Step 1 of 5Does he need antibiotic prophylaxis for endocarditis? For which procedures?
