Case 1 of 8
New complete dentures that hurt
The case
A 74-year-old woman received new upper and lower complete dentures 5 days ago. She has been edentulous for 20 years. She reports sore spots under the lower denture and that the lower denture moves when she talks and eats. She has type 2 diabetes (HbA1c 7.2%), takes metformin and lisinopril, and wears her dentures 24 hours a day. Exam: two small ulcers on the lower ridge in the canine region, a resorbed lower ridge with mentalis muscle attachments near the crest, and a well-formed upper ridge.
Step 1 of 4How would you classify her edentulism, and why does it matter?
Think it through, ideally out loud, before you look.
