Case 1 of 8

Cavities in a 3-year-old

The case

A 3-year-old girl is brought in because her mother noticed brown spots on her front teeth. She goes to bed with a bottle of juice and snacks often during the day. She is healthy, weighs 15 kg, and has never seen a dentist. The family lives in an area without fluoridated water. Exam (knee-to-knee): cavitated lesions on the four upper incisors and the occlusal surfaces of two primary molars, none with pain, swelling or sinus tracts; white spot lesions on the lower incisors. Visible plaque. She cries but allows the exam.

  1. Step 1 of 4What is your diagnosis and caries risk?

Think it through, ideally out loud, before you look.
