Case 1 of 8

Large overjet in a 9-year-old

The case

A 9-year-old boy is brought in because his upper front teeth stick out and he was teased at school. He has already chipped an upper central incisor falling off his bike. He is healthy, has no habits now (he sucked his thumb until age 6), and is in the early mixed dentition. Exam: convex profile with a retrusive chin, lips incompetent at rest, overjet 10 mm, overbite 6 mm, Class II molar relationship by a full cusp on both sides, no crossbite, mild crowding. His parents ask whether he should start braces now or wait.
